Dear colleagues:

To strengthen Eileen's message I would like to add this.

In November 2015, OCLC Research published a new compilation < The Library in
the Life of the User : Engaging with People where They Live and Learn"

I contacted the author Dr. Lynn Silipigni Connaway and invited her to talk to
us about this research at our upcoming AJL conference. She was very much
interested but declined for logistic reasons - she will be in Europe at the
time of our conference.

Through our colleague Rick Burke, we are now in contact with Lorcan Dempsey,
Vice President, OCLC Research and Chief Strategist who commented on Dr.
Silipigni Connaway's research with this appropriate charge: "It is important to
think of the library in the life of the user instead of the traditional model
of the user in the life of the library." We hope he will join us in Charleston
to talk about how library user behaviors have changed as new technologies have
emerged and how we (the librarians and information specialists) should learn
about these new styles and adapt to them.

Please put the 51st AJL Conference on your calendar (June 19th-21st, 2016) - we
have so much to learn together and the program is full of opportunities to do
just that.

See you soon in Charleston, SC

I hope those of you that read the article online also read the comments. Most
of them felt the author has a very old-fashioned view of what a library really
is, and I would agree with that. Libraries and librarians serve the public in
many more ways than just recommending books; we are information professionals.
Those people who still think of us in the traditional way have probably not
been in a library in a long time. What we need to be better at is getting the
word out about how libraries can serve the public and making libraries matter
to the communities that support us.
