In a way, this can become an opportunity for that synagogue. In announcing that they need to discard all their books, they can put out a call for donations, and perhaps make it clear that they are making a new collection that will be updated and relevant. Perhaps they can put out a curated list of classics they would like to replace, but also request that people "clean out their shelves" and bring over Jewish books published within the last 10 years. They can also have a "top ten" list of recent books that can be bought and donated-perhaps through an Amazon wish list or something with a clickable link. Or they can just have a "donate $18 to rebuild our library" drive and get people excited about all the new books. I'm certainly not forgetting about all the work involved with creating a new collection, but perhaps it will create lots more interest in the library than previous to the damage.
