Hi Racheli, This email raises an important point: engaging archivists from small(er), local Jewish historical societies.
It's a great topic, and I'd like to remind AJL members that the December RAS roundtable (scheduled for December 2, 7:30 pm) is dedicated to the topic of "Archival Material in Synagogue Libraries." We will certainly make it broader to include archival collections in museums and local historical societies too. Furthermore, it will be great to inventory such collections that very often are 'hidden' (not fully catalogued, and thus not findable in online search engines). Such collections will be important to document through AJL's new mapping initiative. Regards, Amalia S. There is no national organization bringing together local Jewish historical societies. Societies that also are connected to museums have the opportunity to connect professionally through CAJM (Council of American Jewish Museums.) Archivists of local Jewish historical societies could connect professionally through AJL.
