Hi,
When my mother lived in independent and assisted living, she attended the
facilities' bookclubs.  She enjoyed biographies about movie stars, entertainers
or politicians that were prominent in her youth and early adulthood.  She was
already familiar with the people, they were fixed in her long term memory (she
had short term memory issues the last couple of years of her life) and it was a
great discussion starter for reminiscing.  Depending on the cognitive level of
the participants, you don't always have to finish the book.  :-)
"What would you do" kinds of stories or "choose your own adventure" stories
might work well also.  Gives them some additional cognitive
stimulation--decision making, what if's, etc.  :-)  Also depending on the
cognitive level of your participants, something as simple as reading Dear Abby
and asking them what should Dear Abby tell them to do and then seeing if their
solution agrees with Dear Abby's.  My mom loved that.
Besides short stories (which I think is a great suggestion!), you might
consider books that are more episodic in nature, like the various "Small
Miracles" or "Chicken Soup" books.
I would even consider an anthology of folk tales.  Each story is relatively
short and I'm sure you could find ones that would appeal to a mixed group.
Thank you for this question.  It's so important that our elders get this kind
of care and attention!
Judy Petersen

facility   Marcia,I’m volunteering with  residents at Jewish assisted living &
nursing home. (not now)I suggest a collection of short stories. Some elderlie’s
memory is such that, by the time they get to the second chapter, they forget
the first one. A book might frustrate them. How about Apples from the desert by
Savyon Liebrecht ?My friend sRachel Kamin and Lisa Silevrman can send you a
list of, at least, a dozen good books. Amalia W.      From: Beth Braunstein via

Marcia, it's an older book, but a wonderful book club book: The Jew Store by
Stella Suberman - a memoir of her observant (in part) family who moves to
Memphis, where they are the only Jews. Easy to read, lots to discuss.  Carol

to read book with Jewish content  but one that will be accessible to non-Jewish
residents also.  I love suggestions of books that would meet that criteria.  __
