I have 4 classifications for kids books -- E (easy) for ages 0-3, J (junior)
for 4-7, JA (junior advanced) for 8-11, and YA for 12-18. However, as you say,
YA is a very broad category and I just didn't want to create yet another
classification and change all the spine labels.
Having once been burned by accidentally allowing a 12 yr old read a book that
clearly should only have been read by 17 yr olds (his mother was rightly pissed
and I apologized profusely), I now place stickers on the spine indicating
"mature content", that type of thing. That way I don't have to even think about
it upon the rush of checkout.

We are looking for suggestions how to organize our collection of books for the
cohort older than middle grade but younger than adult.  We have been grouping
the books as Young Adult; however, there is a wide variation in these books,
with some having more mature content.   Do other libraries break the books down
further, e.g., Teen and Older Teen?   Do they use other categories?  Please
copy responses to Librarian Ruth Polk at rp...@templesinaidc.org.  Thank you.
