Friends,

I am excited to share a new research guide to Jewish archives, broadly defined,
which you can find online at:
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.jewisharchives.org/guide/__;!!KGKeukY!npQPp4FzpKyTuF4tJKExsBsSTUw5TwjmLlLtIobAcNEGd-l-5y4me3TZ2ssy82sar3I$

The research guide is a supplement to my forthcoming book A Time to Gather:
Archives and the Control of Jewish Culture, which adds to its analysis on
twentieth-century Jewish archives (which focuses, in the book, on Germany, the
US, and Israel) by offering an overview of the global landscape of Jewish
archival institutions and repositories. It presents a brief introduction to the
development of archives in Jewish cultures that emphasizes the active role of
archives in many contexts, and contextualizes how the records of Jewish history
have made their way to our present day. Second, it offers details on important
historical collections including the Cairo Genizah and Emanuel Ringelblum's
“Oyneg Shabes” Warsaw ghetto archive. And finally, it brings together a
directory of contemporary archival institutions dedicated to Jewish history.
This is by no means a completely comprehensive list of all archives, but I have
tried to include as many as I can and also provide detailed write-ups of some
of the most significant ones.

The research guide is an ongoing project — and I have developed it in large
part due to the contributions of many archivists and librarians who shared
details on their collections and activities, to whom I owe many thanks. If
there are archives which you would like to see added to the directory, please
let me know. I also hope that this will be a useful resource for scholars and
also the public who are pursuing researching in Jewish history.

Best,
