The Elias V. Messinas Historic and Architectural Archive of the Synagogues of Greece The archive is based on the Survey and Study of the Greek Synagogues a project initiated in 1993 by Greek-born, Yale-educated architect Elias Messinas (Ph.D., M.Arch., M.Sc.) and on-going for the past 30 years. A project that preserves the Jewish heritage given the destruction of Greek Jewry in the Holocaust – annihilated by 87% - Thessaloniki by 96% - and the urgent need to document and preserve the physical memory of what survived. The archive includes photographic documentation, survey and reconstruction drawings and renderings of synagogues, some that have since been demolished. It is updated and enriched with new materials every year, as Elias’ professional architectural work includes restoration and renovation projects of Greek synagogues today.
