Dear Safranim, Please join us on Wednesday, September 14th at 1pm EST for The New York Public Library's next Work/Cited program, which will take place online.
Overture of Hope: Two Sisters' Daring Plan that Saved Opera's Jewish Stars from the Third Reich is a new book by Isabel Vincent, who will talk with NYPL's Melanie Locay on Work/Cited Episode 18. Wednesday September 14, 2022, 1 - 2 PM ET Visit: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://on.nypl.org/3QXr814__;!!KGKeukY!zsEk8lT6a6H2RlADVQTAim1bYpUwQKIgenX3M0xjhx6osps79BhgmRa9kUKHFJQZkMs5OAZiGMcL0qx5azOTaJymZA$ Ida and Louise Cook, British sisters and passionate opera devotees, befriended some of the biggest opera stars of the 1920s and 1930s — ultimately setting the stage for unlikely rescue missions of Jewish musicians and performers from Third Reich Germany and Austria. They were aided by an even more unlikely ally, Austrian conductor Clemens Krauss, a favorite of Adolph Hitler. In this episode, Vincent will share how the material she consulted across the Library's research collections brought to life "two plucky British music fans" and their efforts to save dozens through means that "resembled the elaborate plots of some of their favorite operas."
