The speakers at Menachem Schmelzer’s funeral were extremely moving and painted
a multi-faceted picture of the person he was. To me, he was a highly respected
colleague. When I began work on the New York Public Library exhibition “A Sign
and a Witness: 2000 Years of Hebrew Books and Illuminated Manuscripts,” in the
mid-eighties, Menachem invited me to The Jewish Theological Seminary Library
and devoted a whole day to working with me. He showed me rare items I would
ultimately borrow from The Seminary for the exhibition, and patiently taught me
new things about Hebrew manuscripts. His generosity and good will were
boundless. Though I have not seen him in some years, I shall miss him.
Heartfelt condolences to his family.

Aryeh (Dr. Leonard) Gold

Former Dorot Chief Librarian of the Dorot Jewish Division, The New York Public
Library
