Introduction to Cataloging Principles

When tasked with organizing your synagogue library, where do you start? This
three-session introductory course will introduce you to the basic principles of
cataloging and organizing the synagogue library.

Outreach and Programming
March 12, 16, 19, 23, 7:00–9:00 pm ET

Explore various programming and outreach ideas that can connect the entire
synagogue community to the library, and learn how to partner with other
synagogue professionals and lay leaders to expand the library’s reach and
relevance.

Introduction to Library Management
April 16, 20, 23, 6:00–8:00 pm ET

Does your library have a collection development plan? Do you know how to create
a library procedure manual? How to assign work for volunteers? Through
discussions, examples from instructors’ libraries, and homework, this highly
interactive class will delve into these topics and more, allowing you to create
plans and policies that will help you manage your library’s day-to-day
operations. An assignment due at the end of session 3 will demonstrate that you
are able to create the policies required for AJL SSCPL advanced certification.
Instructors: Sean Boyle and Aviva Rosenberg

Introduction to Synagogue Archives
May 4, 11, 17, 6:00–8:00 pm ET

Are you passionate about preserving the history of your synagogue? Does your
synagogue have a collection of unsorted boxes or cabinets of documentary
material and you’re unsure where to start? Synagogue archives are often
under-accessed treasure troves for the history of 19th- and 20th-century
Judaism and Jewish communities. This class will introduce participants to the
key concepts of archival principles, methods, and practices for application in
a synagogue setting. Through interactive discussions and assignments,
participants will learn the fundamentals required to create a sustainable
synagogue archive.
Instructor: Hannah Srour-Zackon
