AJL Roundtable/DH Clinic: The Hebrew Novel Project: Problems and Methods

“Roman Mafte’ach: Distant Reading in the Hebrew Novel” constitutes applied 
research in Hebrew literature and digital humanities, resulting in the creation 
of a comprehensive, up-to-date database of the Hebrew novel. The aim of the 
project is to collect data on every novel originally published in Hebrew 
spanning from Avraham Mapu’s ‘Ahavat Zion’ (1853) which is considered the first 
Hebrew novel, and including the latest Hebrew novels published today, in Israel 
and elsewhere.

Yael Dekel (PhD. New York University) is a research fellow in the literary lab 
at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, where she leads the Hebrew Novel project.

AJL Classroom: Introduction to Synagogue Archives

cataloger Louis Meiselman of the University of Pennsylvania, will show

CALA/AJL Webinar: Bernardine's Shanghai Salon: The Story of the Doyenne of Old 
China

Join author Susan Blumberg-Kason, who will talk about her book Bernardine's 
Shanghai Salon: The Story of the Doyenne of Old China (forthcoming, Post Hill 
Press, November 2023).

This biography of Bernardine Szold Fritz traces her experiences moving to and 
living in Shanghai in 1929 and her perspective as a Jewish salon host who 
engaged with Chinese and expats "around the arts as the civil war erupted and 
World War II loomed on the horizon."

Co-Presented by the Chinese American Librarians Association and the Association 
of Jewish Libraries in honor of Jewish American Heritage Month and Asian 
American and Pacific Islander Heritage month in the United States and Asian 
Heritage Month and Canadian Jewish Heritage Month in Canada in May.
