Refresh your program offerings with some inspiration from experienced
librarians! Whether you're new to a library position or an old-timer with loads
of experience, there are always new ways to engage your patrons and connect
with your community. Five librarians will describe Jewish-oriented activities
they have successfully implemented for a variety of library types and a variety
of ages—from storytime series to digital citizenship lessons and beyond.

OCLC Tips and Tricks with Jasmin Shinohara (University of Pennsylvania).
Since 2005, OCLC has had the capability of adding non-Latin script to records.
With many years cataloging Hebraica in OCLC, Jasmin Shinohara will share tips
that make the task a little easier. These include keyboard shortcuts (e.g.,
change the directionality of a field from left-to-right and right-to-left; move
fields up and down without needing to cut/paste; the multifaceted function
keys; etc.), text strings (e.g., input diacritics without opening special menus
each time; add frequently used fields, such as “504 Includes bibliographical
references.”; etc.), and macros (e.g., generate authority records directly from
a bibliographic record; add 3xx fields to records; etc.). She'll share how to
optimize the OCLC Toolbar ribbon for efficiency and include instructions for
saving preferences in a backup folder so they are not lost with updated
software versions or computer glitches.

TUESDAY, JUNE 20
2:45–4:00 pm
>From Possibility to Print: Demystifying the World of Publishing with Liesa
>Abrams (Labyrinth Road, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books), Sam
>Farkas (Jill Grinberg Literary), and Rena Rossner (The Deborah Harris Agency)
This panel will be a chance to hear how agents and editors with strong track
records of success in mainstream commercial publishing bring great books to
print. Special focus will be paid to the challenges and nuances of publishing
Jewish books at large mainstream publishers. Participants will discuss
fact-checking vs. sensitivity reading, handling obscure details or
controversial topics for wider audiences, and more. The presenters will pull
back the curtain and give librarians a view of what really goes into creating a
book. Everyone has a list of what they’d love to read, or what their patrons
are requesting: why haven’t we seen those books yet and how can we as readers
and librarians let publishers know what we’re looking for?

of Jewish literature which merit special attention by general adult readers and
the librarians who work with them. Fiction, nonfiction, and poetry that
explores the Jewish experience is considered for the award. Come learn about

Sean Boyle (Congregation Keneseth Israel).
This session will show how one can align helping someone with their Jewish
literacy needs to Maimonides’ Eight Levels of Charity (the Eight Levels of
achieving Jewish Literacy). It will be demonstrated that a well-trained
librarian and a well-funded library is the only way of achieving the highest
level of Jewish Literacy. Learn how displays, programs, services and even book
donations relate to the Eight Levels of achieving Jewish Literacy. Also learn
how to demonstrate value of the library program and advocate for proper
training and funding support in terms that are relatable to Jewish
administrators.
