Dear Colleagues,

I have recently come across a magnificent award winning book entitled The Art of Symeon Shimin that showcases the rich and expansive record of the life and fine art of one of the 20th century’s finest artists, and deserves more attention and exposure than it has previously received since its publication in 2019.

Born in Astrakhan, Russia in 1902 Shimin immigrated with his family to Brooklyn in1912. Enduring much hardship he found his calling as an artist. He was known as an artist of Hollywood film posters that included painting the original poster for Gone With the Wind and as an award-winning illustrator of 57 children's books including Isaac Bashevis Singer's Joseph and Koza and many Judaic titles.

However it is his lesser known fine art that is represented here with over 100 fine art prints of his paintings and archival photographs. Like much of his work his inspired PWAP mural,  Contemporary Justice and The Child, created in 1936-1940 for the Department of Justice Building, Washington, DC, reflects his profound concern for those in poverty and the oppressed.

His work is of great importance in this time revealing the significant social role artists have in our society. Every Judaica library should have a copy.

More information with illustrations of Shimin's work and  how to order the book can be found at www.symeonshimin.com
