Dear JTS Community,

I write to share the news that Dr. David Kraemer, Joseph J. and Dora Abbell
Librarian and Professor of Talmud and Rabbinics, will be stepping down from
his role as Librarian on June 30, after 22 years of distinguished service.
He will return to full-time academic duties, continuing to serve as an
inspiring and dedicated teacher of Talmud and Rabbinics.

Professor Kraemer’s accomplishments as Librarian are numerous, and both JTS
and its students, as well as the wider public, have benefited greatly from
his leadership. His connection to JTS spans decades, beginning with his
arrival as a student in 1977. He began teaching in 1980, received his PhD,
joined the faculty full-time in 1984, and assumed the position of Librarian
in 2004. Alongside his work in The Library, he has published numerous
books, articles, and op-eds that have shaped his field and inspired
colleagues.

His vision and commitment to making The JTS Library’s Rare Book collection
accessible has made them a key part of the education of JTS students, while
also ensuring that scholars and the wider public could more easily engage
with these treasures. Under his guidance, The Library has digitized many of
its most important manuscripts and processed and catalogued thousands of
rare and semi-rare books salvaged from the 1966 Library fire. The Library
reached a key milestone when it became the first major Genizah collection
to digitize its holdings for the Friedberg Genizah Project, demonstrating
that the process could be done safely and efficiently, and paving the way
for digitizing numerous other collections.

Recognizing the profound ways in which new technologies necessitated
reimaging the form and function of libraries, Dr. Kraemer led several
successful strategic planning initiatives that laid the groundwork for the
new campus facility, which includes a new exhibition gallery and
state-of-the-art conservation lab. These initiatives also subsequently led
to the development of a new website, which we are excited to launch soon.
This new online resource will further expand access to our treasures,
making it possible for anyone to explore key items in the collection and
consider what they teach us about Jewish history and culture. This new
website will vastly expand the number of people who can experience our
collection.

Most recently, Dr. Kraemer served as the co-curator for the largest
exhibition of Library

manuscripts ever at the Grolier Club, which I urge you all to visit before
it closes on December 27, 2025.  This landmark exhibition is the most
extensive display ever of the Library’s Hebrew manuscripts and is The
Grolier Club’s first exhibit devoted exclusively to Jewish treasures. It
features over 100 manuscripts and books, exploring the diversity of
cultures in the lands in which Jews lived.

Dr. Kraemer’s last major project as Librarian will be the publication of a
catalog documenting The Library’s great treasures. This volume will be a
lasting testimony to the richness of The Library’s collections and their
importance for our understanding of the Jewish past.

We are fortunate that Dr. Kraemer will remain on the faculty, ensuring that
JTS students will continue to benefit from his scholarship, wisdom, and
mentorship. We look forward to sharing news about new Library leadership as
our plans develop.

Please join me in wishing Dr. Kraemer a heartfelt thank you for his years
of dedicated, stellar service to The JTS Library.

Sincerely,

Shuly Rubin Schwartz
Chancellor
