AJL Roundtable: The Cache of Lublin Yeshiva Books in Warsaw: A Discovery
Thursday, February 5, 2026
9:00 am PT / noon ET / 7:00 pm Israel Time

The fate of the library of Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin is one of the greatest
mysteries from the postwar history of Lublin, if not from the history of Jewish
heritage in Poland. Some, with no exaggeration, compare it to the Amber
Room—the Yeshiva book collection consisting of tens of thousands of volumes,
including priceless and extremely rare, old Hebrew prints, vanished almost
without a trace. For years, historians and journalists have been searching for
it in vain, and only five volumes seemed to have survived from this vast
library. In recent years, however, a laborious search has made it possible to
identify and catalogue nearly sixteen hundred books bearing various provenances
of Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin, scattered in libraries, yeshivot, private
collections, or even damp basements around the world. In his presentation,
Piotr Nazaruk, the coordinator of the search, will delve into the turbulent
post-war history of Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin library collection and report the
newest developments in his project.

Piotr Nazaruk is an educator, curator, and researcher at the Grodzka Gate–NN
Theater Center in Lublin, Poland, focusing on researching the Yiddish press and
history of Lublin Jews in the 19th and 20th centuries. Currently he coordinates
the Digital Yeshiva Library project
