The Life and Work of Lore Segal January 22, 2026-April 15, 2026 On January 22, the Leo Baeck Institute (LBI) will open its first exhibition of 2026: And That's True Too: The Life and Work of Lore Segal. An evening launch event will feature renowned actor Toni Kalem (The Sopranos) reading from Lore Segal’s autobiographical novel Other People’s Houses and initiate a season of programming dedicated to Segal’s celebrated literary work and legacy. And That’s True Too: The Life and Work of Lore Segal, which will run through April 15, 2026, is a richly documented exploration of the life and literary legacy of Lore Segal (1928–2024). Born in Vienna, Segal survived Nazi persecution as a child and escaped on one of the earliest Kindertransports to England. Her subsequent years—marked by displacement, reinvention, and a lifelong engagement with language—shaped a body of work distinguished by moral clarity, wit, and intellectual rigor. The title And That’s True Too reflects Segal’s lifelong commitment to complexity and multiple perspectives—an ethos that runs through her writing and her reflections on memory, identity, and human connection. The publication of her autobiographical novel Other People’s Houses (1964) garnered Lore Segal a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 1985, The New York Times declared that Segal had “come closer than anyone to writing the Great American Novel” with Her First American, an exploration of the intersection of race and Holocaust history. Her short-story collection Shakespeare’s Kitchen (2007) was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. Notably, all three books will be reissued in spring 2026, along with a posthumous collection of stories, Still Talking. Based on an exhibition first presented in Vienna’s Bezirksmuseum Josefstadt and the Austrian town of Fischamend (Segal’s grandparents’ hometown), the New York exhibition is augmented by photographs, manuscripts, rare books, archival materials, and a video produced by curator Karin Hanta and the writer’s grandson, Benny Segal. These artefacts trace Lore Segal’s journey from prewar Vienna to New York and examine how exile informed her novels, short stories, translations, and children’s books, as well as her influential career as a teacher. The exhibition will be accompanied by a rich program of in-person and virtual events. In addition to the January 22 launch, these include: a conversation with Jeffery Renard Allen, Lore Segal’s former student, who will speak about Black intellectual Horace Cayton, the inspiration behind a central character in Her First American (February 12); a discussion of Segal’s children’s literature featuring Ellen Handler Spitz (Yale University), Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators Executive Director Sarah Baker, and Segal’s artistic collaborators Paul O. Zelinsky, Sergio Ruzzier, and Sophie Blackall (March 4); and a closing celebration during which renowned actors, led by Cedering Fox of WORDTheatre, will read from Segal’s posthumously published Still Talking (April 15, details TBA). Special tours by curator Karin Hanta available upon request.
