Shalom,

If you know of an opportunity for a library school student to get hands-on
experience, please contact the folks at Simmons directly via
[email protected]

Dear Colleagues,

My name is Mollie Metevier and I am an Assistant Professor of Practice and
the Field Experience Manager at Simmons University in Boston, MA. The
School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) is known for offering our
graduate students in archives the opportunity to have hands-on experience
through our field experience program. In addition to our campus in Boston,
we have students all over the United States enrolled in our online program.
This Spring, we have 2 students in California (Studio City and Santa
Barbara) who are in need of local, in-person sites to complete their field
experience. Please read below for more information:

Students enrolled in LIS 438: Introduction to Archival Theory and Practice
are required to complete a 60-hour field experience during the semester.
The field experiences would begin the week of February 16th and would run
until the semester ends in May. Most students work one day a week–or 8-9
days total onsite during the semester - but the supervisor and student can
agree to a schedule that works best for them.

Students usually arrange and describe a small archival collection during
the field experience; more importantly, they have the opportunity to work
in a repository with professional supervision. As part of your supervisory
duties, you will be asked to complete a midpoint and a final evaluation
through our online portal. For more information regarding our program and
this course, please visit our WordPress site

 >.

In placing students, we keep geographical distance/travel time from the
site in mind. If you are located in either of the two areas listed above
and are interested in hosting, please contact us at
[email protected] and
we will work with the student to determine if the commute is reasonable
based on their location. Additionally, I am happy to meet with any
potential site supervisors (either by Zoom or in person) to discuss how the
Simmons SLIS field experience might fit the needs of your repository.

Finally, we routinely have online students throughout the West_Arch region
who are in need of a local field experience placement. If your organization
is interested in becoming part of our internship program, please feel free
to contact us!

Thank you for your consideration!

Mollie Metevier, MLIS
