I think the best way to look at MonadRef is as a generalization of
MonadState.

This could be a way to transliterate (not translate, transliterate) many imperative programs to Haskell. And as such this could be a starting point for many imperative souls into functional liberation :)

I do not think that, for beginners, limitation to Hugs or GHC is serious problem.
