Close, but no banana!  How about:

toUpper c | isLower c = chr (ord c - ord 'a' + ord 'A')
          | otherwise = c

toLower c | isUpper c = chr (ord c - ord 'A' + ord 'a')
          | otherwise = c

Ie. just remove the innermost parentheses from the original version.
