RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP AT ST ANDREWS
                ==================================

Applications are invited for an EPSRC studentship in the Division
of Computer Science at the University of St Andrews starting in September 1997.
The EPSRC awards cover fees and maintenance for 3 years, and are available
to applicants satisying the standard UK residence requirements.
Applicants should have a good honours degree in Computer Science.
We will, of course, also consider overseas applications if suitable
alternative funding can be arranged.

The functional programming group is especially interested in recruiting
students who are interested in the following research areas, which match
our current research interests.

o parallel functional programming: implementation, profiling, granularity
o functional language implementation: code generation, measurement
o persistent functional programming: implementation, hyperprogramming,
           types

We will agree a precise research topic after discussion with the successful
applicant.

Other departmental research interests include persistence and hyperprogramming,
term rewriting, distributed computing, algorithms, symbolic computation
and logical theories. Applications are also welcome in these areas.

St Andrews has a strong background in functional programming research and
possesses close research links with other nearby institutions. The town
offers a pleasant living environment, not far from Edinburgh etc. and
within easy striking distance of the Scottish Highlands.
