You are absolutely right.
But at the time Haskell was designed there was no
general solution to the `deriving' problem, I would say that there is
now, with some form of polytypic construct.

You could imagine a more general `default' mechnism, but it's unclear
what the practical consequences are.  Feel free to experiment! :-)
