You (?) give as an assignment the recursive, list-based
coding of the FFT algorithm, ...

and you worry that the solution might not be original?

Well, it isn't.

I would write more or less the same code (I didn't check
it for bugs...) 
Everybody would.

There is almost no choice, only some details might be different,
the "frequency" decimation instead of "time", different
administration of complex numbers, etc.

My opinion - of an old teacher (seriously).

1. Check the bugs. If the program works, accept it.
2. Ask about the source.

3. If the student claims that he invented it himself,
   propose him to write an article about, and to send
   it directly to the Nobel prize committee.
