I would just like to note that the code fragment I sent in that SPJ refers to is actually only a slightly modified version of some datatypes from Okasaki's paper on square matrices. Just to give credit where credit is due... I didn't bother to mention this when I sent it in because it was just in the context of a bug report on GHC's handling of this declaration.
