I've just uploaded gnome-desktop to Hackage.

This periodically picks a random picture from $HOME/Pictures, and sets
it as the GNOME desktop background. It does this periodically.

As a result, I now see a different beautiful picture of a dragonfly
every 30 seconds, without needing to wait for the screensaver to kick
in.

Timings and directory can be set on the command line.
