For reasons I'm not going to go in to, I need to install some of that
trendy "Instant Messageing" software, specifically gaim. There is a
Debian package of it. So I apt-get install gaim:
$ sudo apt-get install gaim
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
gaim-data gcc-4.0-base libao2 libaspell15 libaspell15c2 libglib2.0-0
