Tabs/spaces whatever. There's not a single tool that will misformat code only using spaces, whereas the majority of tools will need to be set up to show tabs correctly, and that's assuming the indentation levels across all of the code bases you use are consistent. Sure that doesn't matter if tabs are used for nested indentation and spaces for formatting, but unless you wrote the code yourself (or the code's author was anal retentive) the chances of that are approximately 0%. Spaces it is, for portability sakes.
