Oddly, about 1 in 10 it doesn't pop the box up and the mouse does just start working. I can only assume this is a bug.
Try always plugging it into the same USB port. XP would freak out on me and want to reinstall drivers if I dared to plug in my camera on a different port than the last time I plugged it in.
