it's not just 501...  my local smtp server knows _with authority_ which
local users do not exist.  so when a message is written with a few valid
addresses and one invalid (local) address, what happens?

the only windows MTA that seemed to get this right was eudora, but
that's hateful for other reasons.  even thunderbird screws this one up.
