One way to make a windows PC at least 'a bit' useable.
I have not found a better way so far.

With Cygwin I can now run KDE on a windows machine, use xterms and
scp/ssh to go to *real* servers and workstations.

Cygwin might be far from perfect, but at least it is a *free* way
to make an unuseable machine useable.
