I recently had to deal with the exact same problem in PowerPoint;
non-embeddable files are referenced by absolute pathnames, including drive
letters.  This yeilds a similar level of nonportability for presentations.

Fortunately for me, search-and-replace on the path fixed the file without
corrupting it, so OOo is still more hateful.
