Even if you could theoretically configure more settings, the
coöperative multi-tasking wouldn't let you actually get to them, so
the benefit was nullified. ;-)
I keep hearing people say this, and yet it's still not true, smiley
or not.
It's called "exaggeration for rhetorical effect".
Like I said the last time this came up, my 7600 was flakey as hell
under Mac OS 8 and 9. It was faster and more reliable running OS 8
under Sheepshaver under BeOS than native, it was more responsive and
reliable under OS X than under OS 9. Not only that, but my Performa
was technically more powerful than my NeXTstation, and had pretty much
the same CPU, but the NeXTstation kicked its butt.
Classic Mac OS was hateful, hateful, hateful, you had to baby it to
keep it alive, you had to be bloody careful about what applications
you ran, what applications you ran with other applications, what
utilities you used in combination. Sharing files while you were
working in Photoshop or playing music in iTunes was an exercise in
futility. It was effectively single-tasking.
Windows 95 was more stable, responsive, and reliable.
There were some very nice things about Classic Mac OS that I miss, but
damn...
