J-D: Andrew's suggestion sounds cleaner if it will work for you. Otherwise, in
your code, looks like we could just read this.period once at the start of the
method into a local variable and use the local variable rather than this.period
thereafter. Should probably change this.period to be volatile so threads see
changes promptly.
