Currently there isn't a byte[] getter/setter and that would be nice.  You can 
use Hives ByteArrayWritable class (or something like that) to do the same thing 
in HCat.  I forget how this was done but in the Yahoo! tests it uses this.  

Agree that a getBinary would be nice.
