Just for the record, I'm in the same exact situation as Vesa. I also run ArchLinux. The symptoms were exactly the same, and changing ssh.hcoop.net to mire.hcoop.net has fixed the problem. I do have the problem with permissions, but the problem seems to be only in the home directory, not its subdirectories.
Vesa, have you had luck with OpenAFS under ArchLinux?
