Is http://wiki.hcoop.net/wiki/BackupServices accurate as to how things are
being backed up now?

And is everyone aware that this will NOT work with AFS? AFS does not permit
hard links (except between files in the same directory)

AFS has a notion of backup (BK) volumes that are copy-on-write snapshots of the
RW volume and MUST exist on the same fileserver and partition as the RW volume.
There can only be one BK volume per RW volume, so multiple days cannot be
stored in this way.

Is there free space (ideally on seperate physical disks) on the AFS server to
store vos dumps using the standard AFS per-volume backup methods?

If desired, I can possbily talk to some people about getting a box a UIUC for
storing "vos copies" (or maybe even vos clones) of various important volumes.
Ideally, we'd just setup another AFS fileserver at another hosting provider and
vos copy data between the two servers, assuming this isn't bandwidth cost
prohibative.
