You can be assured that unglobbing "~adamc" in a shell or calling
getpwent("adamc") in a program will work. Is that sufficient? That
would be the most portable and robust against any future changes.
Creating a flat directory in AFS with all the users would sort of
defeat the scalability advantage of breaking things down
sourceforge-style. Creating the symlinks on local disk (which may or
may not handle large directories better than AFS) on every machine
would be kinda annoying.
