What kind of compression was used? If it is n-bit or scale-offset, then it is 
available in 1.8.* only and not in 1.6.*. My understanding is that IDL 7.1 
still uses 1.6.7. Have you contacted IDL and asked them to support 1.8.*? 

The binaries you used from our Web site are part of the pilot project to see 
how much work it will be for us and ITTVis to address IDL being "behind" and 
using old buggy versions of HDF5, and to help them to move to 1.8.*. It was not 
intended to replace official IDL distribution. Wouldn't your users need new 
licenses if they move from Linux to Mac? (plus IDL with 1.8.*).
