I don't much care _what_ happens on Day Zero, only that it is specified in
advance so that an informed decision can be made about whether to use symlinks.
Similarly, in reply to Allen, it's not so much what *lstat* returns, only that
it is specified. (We do need to be very clear on permissions for links.)
