Ryan, your attachment doesn't look like a patch.  Its a git-made patch.  Does 
hudson know how to apply theses?

Nicholas, your patch looks more interesting moving the failure counter local.  
The other changes seem fine.  Any reason for making the bestNode static?   
You've changed what bestNode returns.  It now returns null rather than throw an 
IOE with "no live nodes contain current block".  Us over in hbase are not going 
to miss that message.

I'm testing your patch now...
