To avoid having to diddle with the source, you can set the property value from 
the command line:

hadoop jar hadoop-0.20.2-test.jar dfsthroughput 
-Dmapred.temp.dir='/var/lib/hadoop-0.20/cache/${user.name}'

or similar.
