attached fixed benchmark - I fixed the verification code to not spend all of
its time in string concatenation, and fixed the random byte generation to only
happen once at the top of the file. (50x speedup vs original benchmark).
with these benchmarks, the optimization seems to be about 3x vs trunk, which is
pretty nice.
