Thanks Nicholas, I just filed the JIRA HDFS-2712.
Goal for that JIRA is to move the atime and mtime fields down to iNodeFile as 
this will save the memory consumption with dirs and also support setTimes 
access only for directories. We can continue the further discussion in that 
JIRA.
