Note that this change doesn't introduce any new semantics per se. This patch 
just changes the user-visible behavior back to what it was in branch-1. It's 
fixing a bug that was inadvertently introduced in branch-2.

Given that, I don't think that we need to mark this change as being 
incompatible, but I don't feel super strongly about this.
