Suresh Srinivas commented on HDFS-4985:
---------------------------------------

Storage type currently we are considering are Currently we are considering the
following: local Disk, remote {locak rack|remote rack} disk, local SSD, remote
{local rack|remote rack} SSD, local RAM, remote {local rack|remote rack} RAM,
RAID, tape, remote storage (such as S3, SAN) etc. We are also considering
temporary/permanent replicas etc.

We do not need to nail down all the details in this jira, since adding new
storage types can be done in an API and wire compatible way.

> With HDFS-2880 datanode now supports storage abstraction. This is to add
> storage type in to the protocol. Datanodes currently report blocks per
> storage. Storage would include storage type attribute. Namenode also exposes
> the storage type of a block in block locations.
