HDFS and cygwin

While trying to use hadoop as a HDFS datanode on Windows, I ran into it
trying to use DU and excepting because it couldn't find it.  The Hadoop FAQ
claims that one can run Hadoop in just the Windows command prompt.  Does
HDFS have different constraints/need other stuff in order to actually make
use of Cygwin?
