Hi Harsh, Thanks for the update. I will wait for the stable releases of .22 and .23 to test Backup node. Currently I want to check all the namenode failover scenarios and its recovery for Hadoop 1.0.0 version. I tried one conventional way by keeping fsimage and edit log safe using that in case NN is down. What other options I can try for failover recovery test.

The documentation was a mistake, which we've fixed for the next release: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-7297 BackupNode was introduced in 0.21, and is available in the 0.22 release today but it has not been tested at scale afaik. Am not sure how many users it has presently. If you are looking for highly available NameNode, its coming via https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HDFS-1623 possibly in an update to the 0.23 releases in near future. You can also build the branch http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/hadoop/common/branches/HDFS-1623/ to test it out. Hope this helps. I removed entry from "masters" file so that no SNN is started. I configured both machines similarly just for testing want dfs to be started on machine A and backup started on B. hdfs-site.xml: <property> <name>dfs.backup.address</name> <value>B</value> </property> Slaves File: A Now I format machine A and start dfs : ./hadoop namenode -format ./start-dfs.sh But I am not sure if Backup node is started. I think I am missing something. How to get this working and test Backup node.
