This also may be a software driver issue with our JVC 40K D-VHS recorder. As someone told me, the JVC allows for recording with HD encoded output of "1 - record once".
Since these "free" HD channels have no embedded recording codes, the JVC is too stupid to realize that you can record it in HD.
I wrote to JVC on several occasions about some software upgrade for this, but still have not got their attention.....

Isn't it interesting that these stations use a national resource -- and
in the case of PBS actually use donations and public funds, yet don't
