this would be an adjective in the 245 $a.

Questions: are we talking about the surname "Sheyn" now, or a Yiddish adjective? Are we talking about a name or word in the 245$a or in the 245$b or $c?

If the string occurs in a 245$a, a 246 with an alternative spelling can certainly be made.

If the string occurs in a 245$b or $c, LC would NOT put an alternative spelling into a 246 (we seldom put $b in 246, and never put $c)--and it wouldn't be indexed (i.e., searchable) even if it were recorded there, as far as I know.

Can Mr. Talbott put "shin" in the 245, and then add a
246 with "sheyn"?
