Hello, friends,

This is a brief Public Service Announcement regarding the 246 Varying Form of
Title field. Recently, the |g has seen an increase in use for the purpose of
recording the author's name as it appears with varying forms of the title.
There is no basis for this practice nor is it standard practice for the 246
field.

Looking in MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data by LC (or Bibliographic
Formats and Standards by OCLC), the 246 subfield g is defined as "miscellaneous
information". That is, miscellaneous information regarding the variant form of
title, not just any miscellaneous information about the book or its author.
Variant forms of author name are the domain of authority records not the
bibliographic record. Please stop using the 246|g for recording the variant
author name as it appears with the variant tile.

Thank you! Comments and questions always welcome,

Best wishes, Jasmin
