Presenter: Dr. Avi Shmidman, Bar-Ilan University and DICTA

Time: September 10, 1:00 -2:00 PM

Location: Virtual

The European Research Council (ERC) awarded a 10 million Euro grant for the
years 2023-2029 to the “MiDRASH” research
project<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://escripta.hypotheses.org/500__;!!KGKeukY!17nCh7nkf29vLLH2Q6gfRZacTsOdPVzGw3wIHGrFry_YmfPfVU1cnjoF0lSERdUR8Xx2MBNekKMTogdSoQ$
 > (Principal Investigators: Avi Shmidman of Bar-Ilan University and DICTA;
Judith Olsowy-Schlanger of EPHE and Oxford; Nachum Dershowitz of Tel Aviv
University; and Daniel Stoekl Ben Ezra of EPHE).

The project involves the development of algorithms for the automatic processing
and analysis of scanned Hebrew manuscripts, including Handwritten Text
Recognition, Paleographical Analysis, Morphological Analysis, Parallels
Identification, and Fuzzy Matching, among other tasks. By the end of the
project, it will provide a digital analysis of all extant Hebrew manuscripts,
identifying their time, place, genre, and content, and offer an interface for
full-text search of the manuscripts, as well as map connections between them.

In this talk, Dr. Avi Shmidman will describe some of the achievements of the
research project thus far.

Please note that although the talk will be in English, the manuscripts and
texts discussed within the talk will mostly be in the Hebrew language.

Please contact Jessalyn Zoom with questions, [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>.
